Words on Mothering
Part Deux

*as another component
to our little celebration of Motherhood here,
I’ve asked some of Ari’s best friends and favorite writers
to come share letters from their hearts on the journey of parenting;
with her…and with you.
Some are personal, some humorous, some achingly beautiful
—-I see us, everyone of us, in each of them. *

The following is from Casey Mullins.

*Casey’s daughters.

Here’s to the hard won babies.

The ones we fought for

prayed for

cried for

longed for.

Here’s to the hard won babies.

The ones who are known before the are made

and the ones who are wildly loved before they are born.

Here’s to the hard won babies.

The ones who seal the cracks in our soul with their simple existence.

Here’s to our hard won babies,

that have healed our hearts and brought us back.

I’m all chills everywhere. This is so beautiful. We all have hard-won babies in our hearts, even those of us whose mothering days are all in the future.

Amen. I’m missing three from our circle and the ones that came after and between were all hard-won, the kind where you cry with joy after every bout of morning sickness and weep when labour finally begins but it’s with relief. Yes.

This is truly beautiful. I lost one before having my son and four since then. My son is balm to my soul. I may have to frame this for my wall.

    Sonja says:

Oh yes, a thousand times, yes.

I didn’t have any troubles TTC, but my own baby… I lost my first marriage (and with it a handful of my closest friends – funny how that happens with breakups) as a result of my overwhelming desire to have children. I sacrificed so much and waited so long to have my song that I honestly worried that motherhood wouldn’t live up to my expectations. And it didn’t. It exceeded them.

My hard-won baby made all of the pain of that divorce worthwhile. If I could go back in time, I would tell myself to hang in there – my little man was waiting and he would be one of the greatest people I’ve ever known.
